Larvae of directly developing insects, such as bugs, resemble adults. In contrast, specialized larvae of insects with complete metamorphosis, such as beetles, first change into pupae before becoming adults. The illustration was prepared for a conference presentation by Prof. Marek Jindra, whose team investigated the centuries-old mystery of the origin of the pupal stage.
